What a great insight into that particular chapter of Australian history and the origins of Waltzing Matilda! My Dad (who is German) always likes to remind me that the phrase comes from the German 'auf der waltz', referring to the idea of travelling while learning a trade. I think he's also tried to lay claim to the melody as well but, as you've noted, I gather it came from Scotland!
